Born in Scotland early in the nineteenth century, studied at Edinburgh University, and settling in London soon acquired a large practice. He became Surgeon to the Westminster General Dispensary, and lectured on pathology and pathological anatomy at the North London Medical School. Later he was Surgeon and Lecturer on Clinical Surgery at St Mary's Hospital. He was President of the Harveian Society in 1857; a member of the Pharmaceutical Society, he had a special knowledge of the chemical and therapeutical properties of the materia medica. He was Surgeon to the London Scottish Volunteers, and in 1863 whilst with the regiment had a heavy fall off his horse, from which time his health failed, and he died at 18 Upper Seymour Street, on June 13th, 1866.
