Details
Educated at the Middlesex and St George's Hospitals after having been apprenticed to Dr Salkeld, of Durham. He was in general practice in Durham throughout his professional life, and was an assistant to Mr Clifton until 1832, after which he practised in partnership with him. In 1835 he became Surgeon to the County Prison and to the Durham County Hospital, and held both these appointments up to the time of his death. He was also Medical Officer of Health, and Surgeon to the Pittington, Broomside, Framwellgate Moor, and Old Durham Collieries, as well as Medical Referee to the British Empire Mutual Assurance Society. One of his last public acts was to advocate at a meeting the efficacy and importance of vaccination. He died on February 19th, 1870, after a short illness. At the time of his death he was one of the oldest local medical men. He invented an improved splint for preventing shortening of the limb in cases of fracture of the thigh-bone.
