The son of a well-known Winchester surgeon; studied at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals under Cline and Astley Cooper. He then followed his father in practice at Winchester, and from 1827 was Surgeon to the Winchester County Hospital, having as colleagues Henry Giles Lyford (qv) and Charles Mayo (qv). He was a skilful surgeon and published cases - "Distal Ligature of the Subclavian and Carotid for Innominate Aneurysm" (*Med-Chir Trans*, 1840, xxiii, 405); "Hydatids of the Tibia with Removal of Four Inches of the Anterior Part of the Bone"; "Case of Intestinal Calculus". He was an active secretary of the British Medical Association Branch and was one of the best-known provincial surgeons of his time. He died at Winchester on January 19th, 1864, and a tablet to his memory was placed in Winchester Cathedral.
