Details
Was apprenticed to one of the medical officers of the City Dispensary, and completed his professional training at Guy's Hospital. In 1839 he was appointed Resident Medical Officer at the Metropolitan Dispensary, 9 Fore Street, EC, looking on to the churchyard of St Giles's, Cripplegate, at a salary of £100 a year and a house, with liberty to practise privately. He held the office continuously until his death fifty-two years later. It was his duty to visit patients within the confines of the Dispensary district and to call in the consulting staff when necessary. In his early days he rode on horseback to see the patients, and by his gentleness, skill in diagnosis, and personal attention secured a considerable practice. After obtaining a competency he lent money to a friend, who defaulted, and was obliged to continue in practice until he died. Towards the end of his life the residential population had been largely replaced by warehouses and he did but little. He died unmarried on May 20th, 1891, after a few days' illness, from influenza and pneumonia. A small, precise old gentleman, wearing a wig in the daytime and a nightcap in bed, he had a fund of practical knowledge acquired by long experience, and was full of reminiscences of the life and ways in a long-vanished environment.
