Details
Born at Hexham in June, 1816. After taking the London qualification he practised in Hexham and its neighbourhood for sixty years. The country around was then very wild; much had to be done on horseback and gave rise to adventures. During that period he held various posts: Medical Officer to the Board of Guardians, Physician to the Tynedale Hydropathic Mansion, Surgeon to the Police, Medical Referee to the Railway Accident and other Assurance Companies, and Surgeon to the Ridsdale Ironworks and Stonecraft Mining Company. In 1865 he was presented with a gold watch and purse of gold by his patients in and about Hexham in recognition of the manner in which he had discharged his professional duties (*Lancet*, 1865, 1, 79). His address was Battle Hill House, Hexham. He was long a member of the British Medical Association, a regular attendant at Annual Meetings, and at one time President of the North of England Branch. In politics a Liberal, he took an active part in municipal affairs and was instrumental in effecting important improvements in local sanitation. In his early days he was well known in the hunting field. On August 4th, 1899, in the train between Newcastle and Hexham, he was seized with vomiting of blood and died before the train reached the next station. His funeral was very largely attended. Publication: "Radical Treatment of Umbilical Hernia by Ligature." - *Med Times and Gaz*, 1865, ii, 114.
