Details
Born on March 14th, 1867, the eldest son of Sir Charles Stevens, KCSI, Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal. He was educated at St Bartholomew's Hospital, gaining the Entrance Scholarship in 1885, and becoming House Surgeon and Midwifery Assistant. Proceeding to Netley, he won the Martin Gold Medal and the Fayrer Prize in Pathology. He entered the Indian Medical Service in 1893, and was on military duty - including the Chitral Campaign of 1895, for which he received the Frontier Medal and Clasp - until January, 1896, when he passed to civil employment in Bengal. He was again on active service in the Tirah Campaign, 1897-1898, receiving the Medal and two Clasps. Whilst on civil work he was Resident Surgeon of the Medical College, Calcutta, and Surgeon in the districts of Bhagalpur and Darjeeling between 1899 and 1907. In June, 1907, he was appointed Professor of Anatomy in the Calcutta Medical School and Second Surgeon to the College Hospital. With the European War he reverted to military duty and returned to serve in the Indian Hospital at Bournemouth. He died at Paignton on November 18th, 1919.
