Born at Tralee on November 3rd, 1863, and came of a family distinguished in literature, science, medicine, and in the Indian Medical Service [*see* 'Lives of Whitley Stokes, MD. (1763-1845), Celtic Scholar, and of William Stokes, MD (1804-1878), Regius Professor of Medicine,' in *Dictionary of National Biography* by Norman Moore]. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and at St George's Hospital. In 1886 he went out to India as Surgeon Captain, Indian Medical Service, but soon after arrival suffered from typhoid fever and dysentery, and he had to resign on Sept 22nd, 1887. After some years of ill health, and after acting as Assistant Master of the Coombe Lying-in Hospital, Dublin, he settled in practice at 37 Onslow Square, SW, was appointed Medical Registrar at St George's Hospital, Assistant Physician to the Hospital for Diseases of the Chest and Heart, Anaesthetist to the Throat Hospitals in Golden Square and in Great Portland Street, as well as Medical Officer to the Brompton Provident Dispensary. He was a genial, generous, and impulsive Irishman, with a keen sense of professional rectitude, an enthusiastic golfer and fisherman, and a general favourite; he was pursued by ill health, which caused his death at Howth on September 27th, 1906.
