Details
Stewart Desmond Clarke was a consultant surgeon in Belfast, Kuwait and finally at the King Edward VII Hospital, Midhurst. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the son of Brice Richard Clarke, a doctor, and Doreen Clarke née Cassidy, who worked in catering. He studied medicine at Queen's University, Belfast, and qualified MB BCh BAO in 1955. He trained in general surgery in Belfast, Sheffield and Boston, and gained his MCh and his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1960. A year later, he gained his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 1966 he was appointed as a consultant surgeon at the Royal Victoria and Belfast City hospitals. In 1968 he carried out the first kidney transplant in Northern Ireland and continued with the transplant programme there until he resigned in 1974. He then moved to Kuwait as general surgeon to the Kuwait Oil Company Hospital in Ahmadi, where he stayed until 1983. He subsequently moved back to the UK, as a consultant surgeon at the King Edward VII Midhurst. He retired in 1998. In 1958 he married Brenda Elizabeth Hunter. They had five children, David, Janet, Peter, Patrick and Paul, two of whom became general practitioners. Stewart Desmond Clarke died on 25 April 2013 in Worthing Hospital. He was 81.
