Details
Born on 12 January 1873 at 37 Panton Street, London, SW, eldest son of Albert Thurston, braces manufacturer, and Jane Owen, his wife. He was educated at a private school at Margate, and took his medical training at St Thomas's Hospital, where he served as house surgeon and surgical registrar. He was commissioned on 27 January 1900 as lieutenant in the Indian Medical Service, and in the same year won the China medal for war service. He served as resident surgeon at the Medical College Hospital, Calcutta, and became professor of surgery at Calcutta University. He was promoted captain on 27 January 1903, major on 27 July 1911, lieutenant-colonel on 27 July 1919, and retired on 15 June 1927. Thurston married on 1 June 1908 Robertina Patterson Mitchell, who survived him with a son and a daughter. After retirement he lived at Rydak, Budleigh Salterton, South Devon, where he died on 16 March 1942, aged 69. Publications: Series of 101 cases of abscess of the liver. *Ind med Gaz* 1914,1914,49,88.
