Details
Born on 6 March 1875 he was educated at Owens College, Manchester, and the University of Edinburgh, and was a house surgeon at the North Lonsdale Hospital, Barrow-in-Furness. He entered the Indian Medical Service as a Lieutenant in 1903, after winning the Martin memorial gold medal at Netley. From 1908 to 1914 he was Professor of Anatomy at King Edward College, Lahore. He was promoted Captain in 1906 and Major on 31 July 1914. War broke out on 4 August, and he saw active service on the North-West Frontier, in Mesopotamia, and in the former German East Africa (Tanganyika). After the war he returned to India, and from 1922 to 1930 was again at Lahore, as Professor of Surgery and latterly as Principal of the College. He was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and a Fellow of the Punjab University. He was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in 1922, was created CIE in 1929, and retired in 1930. He was President of the Punjab branch of the British Medical Association in 1929-30. During the war of 1939-45 Broome was medical superintendent and surgeon of the Alverstoke Hospital, Gosport, Hants. He married in 1902 Clara Alice, daughter of the Rev W H Finney; there were two sons of the marriage. He died at Salisbury on 31 October 1958 aged 83.
