Details
Born on 12 May 1920 youngest son of Hubert Chitty FRCS, consulting surgeon to Bristol Royal Infirmary, he was educated at Clifton College and won an exhibition to Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he took second-class honours in the Natural Sciences Tripos, part I, 1940. He trained at University College Hospital, won the Erichsen prize in clinical surgery, and qualified in 1943. He was commissioned at once in the RAMC, served in the invasion of Normandy 1944 as medical officer to the engineers constructing "Mulberry" harbour, and in India till 1947. He returned to University College Hospital as surgical registrar under R S Pilcher, Cecil Flemming, and H R I Wolfe. He was appointed senior registrar in the genito-urinary department of the United Bristol Hospitals in 1952, and senior surgical registrar at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Children's Hospital. He moved to Kidderminster in December 1957 on his appointment as surgeon to the Hospital there, and to hospitals at Bromsgrove and Redditch. Chitty was a man of enthusiastic willingness, welcomed everywhere both professionally and socially. He was found dead in the garage of his home Chaddesley Court, Kidderminster on 9 July 1958, apparently overcome by exhaust gas. He was aged 38, and was survived by his parents and his wife.
