Details
Joseph Craig was one of the five sons of a Highland clergyman. He was educated at Christ's Hospital and St Andrews University, where he read medicine and qualified MB ChB in 1919 in spite of repeated ill health. He was house surgeon at the Royal Infirmary, Dundee and then held posts at St Luke's Hospital, Lowestoft, and St Andrew's, Dollis Hill, London. Much of his surgical skill he learnt from Joseph Cunning FRCS of the Royal Free Hospital, and he also worked at St Mary's Hospital. After obtaining the Fellowship in 1924, he went into general practice at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in partnership with W J O'Connor and N E Harvey, and lived at Amersham Hill Lodge. Craig never lost his love for the Highlands and whenever possible went north to the moorland and streams. He had great knowledge of fish and animals, and frequently quoted Burns' poetry. Craig died on 26 May 1960, aged 65; his wife, Mary Brown, and three sons survived him.
