Details
Born on 5 January 1865 he was educated at Foyle College, Londonderry and at St Bartholomew's Hospital, qualifying in 1889 and winning honours and a gold medal at the London MB BS examination in 1890. He also took honours at the MD examination in 1892 and was commissioned a Surgeon-Lieutenant in the Indian Medical Service on 27 July 1892. He served in the Waziristan expedition on the North-West frontier in 1894-95, winning the medal with clasp, and was promoted Surgeon-Captain on 27 July 1895. He was at the relief of Chitral in 1895, again winning the medal with clasp, and was mentioned in dispatches for his services in the defence and relief of Chakdara also on the North-West frontier in 1897-98. He was promoted Major on 27 July 1904, came to England and took the Fellowship in 1906, and in 1908 was elected Professor of Surgery at King Edward's Medical College, Lahore. On the outbreak of war in 1914 he reverted to military duties, having been promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in 1912. He was present at the Dardanelles landing in 1915 as senior medical officer in the hospital ship *Gascon*. Next year, 1916, he was posted to the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force as a consulting surgeon, was mentioned in dispatches, and was created CMG in 1917. After the war he resumed the chair of surgery at Lahore until his retirement at the age limit in 1922. He settled at Richmond, Surrey and served on the medical board of the India Office. He took much interest in the work of the Richmond division of the British Medical Association, becoming its chairman, and was President of the Surrey branch in 1934-35. He also worked for the Red Cross, the Royal Hospital, Richmond, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution which awarded him its gold medal. His younger brother J H Hugo DSO, MRCS 1895, also served with distinction in the Indian Medical Service. Hugo married in 1909. He died at 75 Queen's Road, Richmond on 24 December 1951 aged 86, survived by his wife. Mrs Hugo presented his war diaries to the College Library in 1956.
