Coming south he became senior resident medical officer at the Royal Free Hospital. During the war of 1914-18 he served in the RAMC with the rank of Captain on the Salonika front. Returning, he joined his father's practice at Eastbourne in 1919, and in 1921 was appointed surgeon to the Princess Alice Hospital and the Ear Nose and Throat Hospital. He was chairman of the Eastbourne Division of the BMA in 1930-31 and was elected a Fellow of the BMA in 1960, which Fellowship was conferred upon him by the Duke of Edinburgh. With the advent of the NHS he became chairman of the Group Medical Committee and vice-chairman of the Eastbourne Hospital Management Committee from 1948 to 1951, when he retired.
