Details
Born on 9 February 1888 the third son of A V Maybury MD, he was educated at Epsom College and St Thomas's Hospital. Here he won the Musgrove scholarship and the Cheselden and Treasurer's medals and shared the anatomy scholarship. He qualified in 1909 and was appointed house surgeon to (Sir) G H Makins and (Sir) Cuthbert Wallace at St Thomas's, becoming surgical registrar 1911-13 and resident assistant surgeon 1913-15. From 1915 he served as a surgical specialist in the RAMC in France and later in Italy. After demobilisation he returned to St Thomas's as deputy to Sir Cuthbert Wallace in the new professorial unit and was appointed an assistant surgeon. He was particularly interested in the surgery of the blood-vessels, having worked with Makins on the treatment of peripheral vascular injuries during the war. He became a full surgeon to St Thomas's in due course and was also surgeon to Purley Hospital and Queen Alexandra Hospital, Worthing. He continued his hospital work through the second world war, working at Park Prewett and St Thomas's, Hydestile, retiring at the age of 60 in 1948 to Weston Corbett House, Basingstoke, where he enjoyed his garden and orchard. He had practised at 45 Queen Anne Street. In his generation Maybury was regarded by Thomas's men as the ideal surgeon, combining in equal proportion technical expertise, academic knowledge, and diagnostic skill. Maybury married in 1930 Isobel Wilson Lyall, elder daughter of George Lyall JP, who survived him with their son and daughter. He died in the St Thomas's Hospital country extension at Hydestile, Godalming on 15 November 1953 aged 65. Publications: The Appendix, and The Peritoneum, in Choyce's *System of Surgery*, 3rd edit 1932, 2, 421487. Treatment of traumatic false aneurysm and arterio-venous fistula. *Bull War Med* 1945, 5, 417.
