Born on 28 December 1876 third of the four sons of William Henry Rothery Nutt, an official of the Bank of England, and his wife née Bloxam, he was educated at Bedford Modern School and St Mary's Hospital, where he was house surgeon, assistant demonstrator of physiology, and clinical assistant and demonstrator in the skin department; he had a brilliant record as a student. Nutt was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Indian Medical Service on 27 June 1901, and saw active service on the North-West Frontier, particularly at Derwesh Khel Waziri during 1901-02. He was promoted Captain on 27 June 1904, and served as a civil surgeon in the United Provinces 1908-14 being promoted Major on 27 December 1912. During the first world war he served in Egypt in 1915, then in hospital ships in the Mediterranean, and in East Africa during 1916-17. He was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel on 27 December 1921, and served till 1924 as Professor of Surgery at King George's Medical College, Lucknow which was incorporated in Lucknow University from 1921; he was also surgeon to the King George Hospital. From 1924 to 1930 Nutt held various large civil surgeoncies, the last being at Allahabad; he was placed on the special list for promotion on 8 September 1927 and gazetted Colonel on 5 November 1929. From 1930 to 1933 he was Inspector-General of Civil Hospitals, and served as President of the United Provinces branch of the British Medical Association in 1931-32. He was promoted Major-General in 1933 and appointed Surgeon-General to the Bombay Government. He received the distinctions of being an honorary surgeon to the Viceroy 1934-35 and subsequently to the King. He retired in 1935 and settled at Bexhill, where he enjoyed gardening and motoring; later he moved to Eastbourne. Nutt married in 1909 Minnie, daughter of William McKerrow, who survived him with a daughter. He died at his home Warren Down, Upper Carlisle Road, Eastbourne on 2 January 1953 aged 76. Nutt was thorough in all he did, but preferred civil practice to his term of academic work at Lucknow. He was a witty and cheerful companion.
