Details
Born at Tidebrook in 1875 the seventh child of the Rev A J Roberts, he was educated at Marlborough, King's College Hospital, Berlin and Vienna. At King's College he was a house surgeon and he became senior resident medical officer at the Evelina Hospital for Children. In 1907 he was appointed honorary surgeon to the Royal Hospital, Devonport but in 1914 he moved to Winchester where he was appointed honorary surgeon to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in succession to his cousin Cecil Wace, at the same time being appointed medical officer to Winchester College and to St Swithun's School for Girls. Retiring from his hospital appointments in 1935, he remained in general practice until 1957. In 1920 he was awarded the CBE in recognition of his services to the wounded in the Winchester Red Cross Hospital during the 1914-18 war. He was a very good school doctor, known to hundreds of Wykehamists and recognised as the doyen of the medical profession in Winchester. Shooting, fishing and golf afforded him relaxation. He married in 1906 Florence Muriel, daughter of Colonel A McLeod Mills. They had three sons and a daughter, one son being G C D Roberts FRCS. He died on 25 September 1962 aged 87 at his home Preston House, Winchester, Hants.
