After resident appointments in London he became surgeon to the GWR Hospital at Swindon and the Victoria Hospital. When he came to Swindon in 1930 there was promise of a new hospital, but he died before the Princess Margaret Hospital was completed. Schofield married Patricia Luxon, who had been a ward sister at the Victoria Hospital; they lived at Springfield House, Croft Road. He died on 29 May 1964 while attending the annual general meeting of the Swindon Division of the BMA when he had just been installed as chairman. He was survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. Schofield was particularly interested in the surgery of the stomach. He had played tennis for his county and was a powerful swimmer.
