Born on 16 June 1885 the son of a doctor, he received his medical education at Guy's Hospital and while a student obtained first-class honours in physiology in the BSc examination, was a scholar of the medical school, and won the Oldham and Beaney prizes. In the war of 1914-18 he served as medical officer with the Royal Flying Corps, and after the war, returning to Guy's, worked as chief assistant in the orthopaedic department and as senior registrar at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, becoming a close friend of A S B Bankart. When he became a consultant he was appointed orthopaedic surgeon to the Croydon group of hospitals and also to the West Kent General Hospital, Maidstone and to Whipps Cross Hospital. For a time he was consulting orthopaedic surgeon to Kingston Hospital. At the College he was a Hunterian Professor in 1922 and 1925. He was a member of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association. During the war of 1939-45 he acted as an orthopaedic consultant to the RAF. He was particularly successful as an expert witness in cases of injury and was joint author with D K Dix of *Medical evidence in personal injury cases*, London, H K Lewis 1961. An excellent teacher, he was a modest and reserved man but a true friend in a time of need. An experienced musician, he was particularly interested in church music. He married Constance, by whom he had two sons: Peter Graham Todd MD, MRCP and Ian Pelham Todd MS, FRCS, who became President 1986-88. He died at his home 33 Wildwood Road, NW11 on 17 January 1962.
