Details
This obituary appeared in volume four of Plarr's Lives of the Fellows : Born at St Helens and educated at Stonyhurst College and Liverpool University he graduated in medicine and surgery with honours before he was 21, the legal age for registration. He was a resident at the Royal Infirmary and demonstrator of anatomy for two years at the University, and then served the Royal Southern Hospital as surgical tutor and registrar and latterly as acting assistant surgeon. He was appointed surgeon to Bootle General Hospital in 1927 but came back to Liverpool in 1933 as assistant surgeon to the Stanley Hospital, becoming surgeon in 1935. He was also visiting surgeon to Mill Road Infirmary till it closed in 1941, when his unit was transferred to Broadgreen Hospital. He was lecturer in clinical surgery and an examiner at the University, and became Vice-President of the Liverpool Medical Institution. Unsworth was a perfectionist, somewhat reserved in manner with a dry sense of humour. Pheasant shooting and salmon fishing were his favourite recreations. He practised at 55 Rodney Street and lived at 1 Knowsley Road, Cressington Park, Liverpool. He died on 21 July 1964 aged 63, survived by his wife Dr Gladys Unsworth The following obituary appeared in volume five of Plarr's Lives of the Fellows: Stanley Vincent Unsworth was born at St Helens and educated at Stoneyhurst College and Liverpool University where he graduated MB ChB with honours in 1921, but had to wait a year to be registered at the age of 21. After junior clinical posts at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary he spent two years as a demonstrator of anatomy, and was then appointed surgical tutor and registrar at the Royal Southern Hospital where he worked for eight years, the latter part of that period as honorary assistant surgeon. In 1926 he obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the Fellowship of the English College in 1927. In this same year Unsworth was appointed honorary surgeon to Booth Hospital, and in 1933 he joined the staff of the Liverpool Stanley Hospital as assistant surgeon, becoming full surgeon in 1935. In 1935 he was also appointed to Mill Road Infirmary, and when it was closed in 1941 his unit was transferred to Broadgreen Hospital. He was a lecturer in clinical surgery and also an examiner in Liverpool University. These numerous appointments indicate his unusual gifts as a surgeon, for he was not only skilful but also so sound in his judgement that his colleagues frequently sought his advice in diagnosis and treatment. He was very keen on field sports, especially fishing and shooting, yet withal was modest and unassuming. Unfortunately he suffered a final distressing illness in which he was nursed by his devoted wife, Dr Gladys Unsworth. He died at his home in Liverpool on 21 July 1964, aged 63.
