Daniel Jacob du Plessis (known as 'Sonny') was professor of surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, vice president of the College of Medicine of South Africa from 1969 to 1974, and chairman of the steering committee and first president of the Surgical Research Society of Southern Africa. From 1978 to 1983 he was vice chancellor and principal of the University of the Witwatersrand. Born on 17 May 1918, he studied medicine at the Witwatersrand and received his FRCS in 1951. His personal research included pioneering work on the aetiology of peptic ulceration. His books *Principles of surgery: a new approach* (Bristol, J Wright, 1968) and *A synopsis of surgical anatomy* (Bristol, J Wright, 1975) were used internationally. Daniel Jacob du Plessis died in 1999. He was 81.
