Details
Born on 29 May 1866 at Romsey, Hampshire, third child and second son of the Rev John White and his wife Martha Fisher, he was educated at Monkton Combe School and University College Hospital, where he served as demonstrator of anatomy for several years and held the usual resident posts. He took honours in medicine and surgery at the qualifying examinations of the University of London in 1888 and 1889, and proceeded to the Fellowship in 1891. He was appointed in 1893 surgeon to the Great Northern Central, now the Royal Northern Hospital, and remained on its staff throughout his career. Among his colleagues from time to time were many who greatly distinguished themselves in a wider sphere; Mower White preferred to maintain and enhance the good work of the Royal Northern, and also built up a large and successful surgical practice round London. He was emeritus surgeon with care of beds from 1920 to 1925 when he retired with the position of consulting surgeon. He was consulting surgeon to the Mildmay memorial hospital and the Willesden general hospital. As chairman of the house committee of the Royal Northern hospital his wise judgment was invaluable. As an operator he was methodical, unruffled, and decisive; he was usually slow, but could be quick when necessary. His twinkling eye and cherubic countenance were universally popular. Benjamin Mower White married in 1900 Alicia Towgood, who survived him with two sons and four daughters, one of whom became a doctor. He died on 23 April 1952 at The Firs, Prestwood, near Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire aged 86. Mrs White died on 10 May 1969 aged 96.
