Born at Hull on 4 February 1867 the son of John Wilkinson MRCS (1859), who was surgeon to the Hull police and died on 25 April 1875; his grandfather having also practised there, he was educated at Hull Grammar School, was a scholar of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and took first-class honours in the Natural Sciences Tripos part I, 1888. A namesake from the same college, who took third-class honours in the same examination, qualified in 1892 and spent his life as a medical missionary in China. Wilkinson took his clinical training at St Mary's Hospital. After serving as assistant house surgeon at the Royal Infirmary, Hull, he went to Sheffield in 1892 as house surgeon at the Royal Hospital and spent the rest of his long life in that city. He was house surgeon at the Jessop Hospital and assistant surgeon to the Children's Hospital. He specialised in otology, and served the Royal Hospital and the Medical School, and subsequently the University of Sheffield, with distinction. At the Royal Hospital he ultimately (1927) became consulting aural surgeon and held the same position at Chesterfield Royal Hospital (1927-34). In the medical school he was demonstrator of practical pathology (1894-99), curator of the museum, lecturer in practical surgery (1899-1909), lecturer in the diseases of the ear nose and throat (1909-27), and lecturer in the history of medicine (1923-45). On his retirement at the end of 1944 he was congratulated by the Council of the University for his valuable services rendered over a period of fifty-one years. Wilkinson took an active part in the sections of laryngology and the history of medicine at the Royal Society of Medicine, and was a member of the International Collegium Oto-rhino-laryngologicum. He was President of the section of otology at the Sheffield meeting of the British Medical Association in 1908. During the war of 1914-18 he served in the RAMC with the rank of Major. Wilkinson married in 1895 Alice daughter of James Foster of Hornsea, who died before him leaving a son and three daughters. One of his grandsons was in practice at Hull in 1956. He practised at 387 Glossop Road, Sheffield living at 6 Claremont Place; he retired for a few years to Fernlow, Baslow Road, Bakewell but went back to Claremont Place in 1949. He died in a nursing home at Sheffield on 5 December 1956 aged 89. He was interested in history and architecture, and enjoyed country life, walking and fishing.
