Born in Anglesey, he was educated at Beaumaris School and the University of Edinburgh, where he qualified in 1906. He held several house appointments at the Royal Southern Hospital, Liverpool and in 1913 was elected to the consultant staff as assistant surgeon. In the war of 1914-18 he served in the RAMC with the rank of Major in the Territorial Army, attached to the 51st Highland Casualty Clearing Station. Returning to Liverpool after the war, he built up a busy practice and a reputation as a sound teacher, excellent surgeon and shrewd diagnostician, so that it was no surprise when he was invited to occupy the chair of surgery on the retirement of Sir Robert Kelly in 1939. At one time he had acted as demonstrator of anatomy in the University of Liverpool and as visiting surgeon to Mill Road Infirmary. Later as Professor of Surgery he was attached to the Royal Southern Hospital as consulting surgeon, and also to the Liverpool Radium Institute and to the Caernarvonshire and Anglesey Infirmary. He was a member of the Welsh National School of Medicine, Vice-President of the University College of North Wales, Bangor, and a member of the Anglesey Health Committee. His later years were dogged by ill health and, as a devoted Anglesey man, he retired to Rhosneigr, where he enjoyed his favourite pastime of fishing. He married Ethel Kenrick daughter of William Thomas, a Liverpool ship owner, by whom he had a son and a daughter. He died on 6 March 1962 aged 78, survived by his wife and children, and was buried in Anglesey on 10 March.
