Details
Born on 4 May 1896 and educated at Aberdeen University, after qualification in 1920 he was appointed senior house surgeon at the Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen, and then casualty officer, resident medical officer and registrar at Great Ormond Street. After this he became a general practitioner surgeon in Weymouth, attached to the Weymouth and District Hospital. Dogged by ill health he retired and joined the London County Council service at Hackney Hospital, working as well at Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, Hackney. In 1939 he went to Paddington General Hospital as medical superintendent but, with the institution of the health service he transferred to an appointment as orthopaedic consultant. An active member of the BMA, he was honorary secretary of the Paddington division 1944-52 and chairman 1953-54. For a time he acted as examiner to the General Nursing Council. A gaunt figure appearing stern in repose, he was sensitive and shy but a shrewd judge of character, and was held in affectionate esteem by his subordinates. Owing to failing health he retired to Lamarsh in Suffolk and died on 6 August survived by his wife and son, Captain Nicholas Gray. His only daughter died shortly before him.
