Details
James Charles Frederick Lloyd Williamson was born in Horley on 9 July 1904. His father was a doctor, and he was educated at Rugby, Emmanuel College, Cambridge and St Bartholomew's Hospital, qualifying with the Conjoint Diploma in 1928, and graduating BChir in 1929 and MB in 1931. After junior appointment at St Bartholomew's he assisted his father in general practice in Horley for a short time and took the FRCS in 1931. He then joined the Royal Sussex County Hospital, first as house surgeon and senior resident medical officer, and in 1934 he became surgical registrar, and honorary surgeon to the Hove General Hospital in 1935 and took the MD degree in 1939. At the Royal Sussex County Hospital he took a special interest in orthopaedic surgery and founded the fracture clinic there. In the second world war Lloyd Williamson served in the RAMC in North Africa and in the Normandy campaign, ending the war with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in charge of the surgical division of the 9th British General Hospital. On demobilization he returned to his orthopaedics at Brighton and general surgery at Hove, and he also served the Horley and District Hospital to which he had been attached since 1935. His work was much appreciated by his colleagues, his patients, and the juniors in whose training he took a special interest. Williamson also had a life-long interest in the Boy Scouts and was for some years district commissioner of the Horley Scouts. Ultimately he became president of the Horley District Scouts and was awarded the honour of the Silver Wolf. He enjoyed walking not only on the local downs but also on the hills of Wales and Scotland. He was called upon to do a great deal of committee work and was elected President of the Brighton and Sussex Medico-Chirurgical Society, and chairman of the local general and orthopaedic surgeons. Lloyd Williamson had a very happy family life and when he died on 5 April 1970 he was survived by his wife, two sons both medically qualified, and two daughters.
