Details
Born about 1874 he was educated at St Mary's Hospital, qualified in 1895 and proceeded to the London doctorate in 1898 and the Fellowship in 1899. He then went to South Africa and served as a civil surgeon with the field force during the war. Afterwards he settled at Pretoria, where he served for thirty-two years as surgeon and finally senior surgeon to the Pretoria Hospital. His work was so highly appreciated that the main operating theatre and a new orthopaedic wing of the hospital were named after him. He was a man of great generosity and unselfishness, esteemed equally by the English, Dutch, and African communities. When he died in 1941 his funeral was attended by most of the diplomatic representatives at Pretoria and by Field-Marshal Jan Smuts. He was survived by his wife; one of their daughters married Judge Walford Dowling.
