Details
Geoffrey Housden was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and at Guy's Hospital London, where he qualified in 1927. After several house appointments at his teaching hospital he went into a general practice in Sloane Square. His interest in surgery led him to take his Fellowship in 1939. He then moved as a general practitioner surgeon to Leominster, Tenbury Wells and Ludlow in Shropshire. He took an interest in local government and was soon elected to the Leominster Council. In 1947 he was appointed consultant surgeon to the Hereford group of hospitals and held that appointment until his retirement in 1969. During his time at Hereford he was President of the Hereford Medical Society. Geoffrey Housden was a hard working general surgeon whose special interest was in thyroid disease but outside his work he had many interests. He was especially keen on tennis and at one time was the secretary of the Herefordshire branch of the Lawn Tennis Association. He was also Vice-President of the Hereford County Hockey Association. Always very popular with his colleagues they were sorry to see his retirement marred throughout by illness. He died at Hereford on 28 May 1971 at the age of 67 and was survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
