George Clifford Jennings graduated in New Zealand and during the second world war he served as a regimental medical officer in the Western Desert. At Sidi Rezegh he was blown up by a land mine and was captured and transferred to Italy where he spent a very difficult time as a prisoner of war till he was repatriated in 1943. While a prisoner he was subjected to surgical treatment which resulted in chronic biliary complications which complicated the rest of his life. However, he bore these handicaps bravely, and having obtained the FRCS in 1948 he undertook a period of orthopaedic training as a registrar at South- lands Hospital, Shoreham, Sussex and at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, which prepared him for the appointment of full-time orthopaedic surgeon to the Wellington Public Hospital when he returned to New Zealand in 1950. Jennings gained an outstanding reputation for his work in this post which he held till 1962, and he was a foundation member of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association. He gave up the full-time hospital work in order to enter private orthopaedic practice in Wellington, but he was able to maintain his contact with the hospital in a part-time capacity. He was elected FRACS in 1969. Although his health had never been really good since his war-time experiences, his death on 20 August 1971 was sudden and unexpected. He was survived by his wife and three daughters.
