Herbert George Tymms graduated MB in the University of Melbourne in 1894, and BS in 1895. He then became RMO at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1895-6, and subsequently came to England where he obtained the Conjoint Board Diploma in 1899 and the FRCS in 1901. On returning to Australia he settled in Perth and was appointed medical superintendant of the Royal Perth Hospital in 1906, continuing in that post till 1911. In that capacity he re-organized the kitchens and imported trained cooks and dieticians from English hospitals, thus earning much criticism. Tymms was appointed honorary surgeon to in-patients in 1912 and consulting surgeon in 1921. He had many interests in Perth besides his professional work, having been President of the Western Australia Branch of the BMA; Justice of Peace for the State of Western Australia; President of St John's Ambulance Association from 1914 till 1931; and Knight of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. He lived to a great age, and unfortunately suffered in his latter years from loss of vision. He finally died at Kew, in Victoria on 7 October 1965. **See below for an expanded version of the original obituary which was printed in volume 5 of Plarr’s Lives of the Fellows. He was born in Melbourne, Victoria, on 6 July 1873, the son of Robert Joseph Tymms, who was born in London, and Anna Augusta Tymms née Magee. Tymms attended Scotch College in Melbourne and went on to study medicine at Melbourne University, where he won the Beaney scholarship in surgery in 1895. He held junior posts at Melbourne Hospital and then became a ship’s surgeon on the White Star Line to travel to the UK. He studied at St Bartholomew’s, gained his MRCS LRCP in 1899 and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1901. While he was in England he worked as an assistant medical superintendent at Croydon and Camberwell infirmaries. On his return to Australia he became medical superintendent of Rockhampton Hospital in Queensland. He then moved to Perth, as medical superintendent. He later relinquished this role but stayed as a consultant surgeon at the hospital. He was reportedly still practising in 1963 at the age of 90. He married Helene Theresa Maria Harris in 1904 in London. They had two children, a son and a daughter. Predeceased by his son, who went down with HMAS *Perth* in the Second World War, and his wife, Tymms died on 7 October 1965 at the age of 92. He was survived by his daughter. Sarah Gillam
