Dayal Bhana had a distinguished career as a medical student and was awarded the first prize and gold medal in anatomy, second prize in general and clinical physiology, first prize and gold medal in medicine. Following qualification he held a number of junior appointments including medical intern and senior house officer in medicine at Dr Steevens' Hospital, Dublin, and demonstrator in anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland 1956-1957. These posts were followed by more senior appointments including registrar in general surgery, Bury and Rossendale Hospital, Bury, and registrar in general and vascular surgery, Dartford Group of Hospitals. Dayal Bhana was then appointed senior registrar in surgery at Mulago Hospital and lecturer in surgery Makerere University College Medical School, Kampala, Uganda. He later became consultant surgeon, Mulago Hospital, Kampala in 1970 and resigned in 1973. He went to Canada and was appointed resident in surgery/tutor in the department of surgery, University of Calgary, Alberta, 1973-1974. Dayal Bhana entered general surgical practice in Hanover, Ontario and was a staff member of Durham, Walkerton and Hanover Hospital. He was killed in a car accident on 25 May 1977.
