Details
Shankar Ramchandra Joglekar was born in Poona on 10 July 1894. His father, Rao Bahadur R N Joglekar was a civil servant for the Government of Bombay and his mother, Sitabai Joglekar, née Pendse, was the daughter of a civil servant. He was their third child and first son. He attended Poona High School, Deccan College, Poona, and the University of Bombay. After preliminary medical training at the Grant Medical College, Bombay he proceeded to University College Hospital London and to Guy's Hospital. At UCH his work was particularly influenced by Wilfred Trotter. Returning to India he became honorary surgeon to the J J Hospital (Bombay) and Professor of Clinical and Operative Surgery at the Grant Medical College from 1927 to 1949. From 1949 onwards he was Emeritus Professor and consulting surgeon to the Grant Medical College. In 1948 he was made President of the Association of Surgeons of India. He married Manik Rajadhyaksha in 1936. His hobbies were cricket, lawn tennis and photography. He produced numerous articles for the *Indian journal of surgery* and many papers for the meetings of the Association of Surgeons of India including an important one on empyema thoracis. He died in 1980 at the age of 86.
