Born on 3 November 1903, the son of Dr H M Wood and Lola Lyon-Campbell, Hubert Lyon-Campbell Wood was educated at Marlborough College and King's College Hospital, London, where he qualified in 1926. In the following year he obtained the MB BS London with honours. His house appointments at King's were followed by the Sambrooke surgical registrarship and in 1932 he was appointed assistant surgeon and surgical tutor, combining these duties with that of assistant orthopaedic surgeon in the department headed by H A T Fairbank. In 1934 he also joined the staff of the Evelina Hospital as orthopaedic consultant. With the outbreak of war he joined the EMS and worked at Leatherhead Hospital throughout hostilities. In 1946 he returned to King's College Hospital becoming senior orthopaedic surgeon in 1952 and also joining the staff of the Royal Masonic Hospital until his retirement from the health service in 1968. He had married Dr Irene Parker Murray in 1935 and she died in 1966. The loss of his devoted wife was a great blow and he went out to Nigeria in 1978 as Professor of Clinical Orthopaedics at Ahmadu Bello University and stayed there nine years. Hubert Wood was a splendid teacher and it was to him that most students turned when they had surgical problems. Quiet and unassuming he was always willing to help when asked and was an excellent advisor as well as a very skilled operator. He died on 16 August 1982 and was survived by his two daughters.
