Haziqul Yaqin was born in 1934 and was educated at the University of Lucknow and King Edward Medical College, Lahore, qualifying MB BS in 1956. He obtained his FRCS Edinburgh in 1966 and the Fellowship of the College the following year. He held appointments at the Mayo Hospital, Lahore, Liaquat Medical College, Jamshoro, and at a hospital in Doha, Qatar. In England he worked at the Margate General Hospital, Royal Sea Bathing Hospital, Margate and at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury. He returned to Pakistan in 1970 and joined KV Social Security SITE Hospital in February 1971 as a consultant surgeon. He was given prizes for his essays on bladder cancer and cholelithiasis by the Oxford Regional Hospital Board in 1968 and 1969 and published several articles in the medical press. He was a member of the Association of Surgical Oncology (London), the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Association of Surgeons of South East Asia and founder member of the Association of Surgeons of Pakistan. His wide-ranging publishing interests included the associate editorship of the *Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association* and membership of the editorial boards of the *British journal of surgery* and *Tropical gastroenterology* (India). He died of a heart attack on 30 August 1982, aged 48. One of his friends wrote that 'together with his charming wife he had a home where a warm welcome awaited all the friends and the national and international visitors - they provided kindness and never-ending hospitality'.
