The following was published in volume 6 of Plarr's Lives of the Fellows Robert Henry Victor Hafner was born on 31 January 1915 in Sheffield. Educated at Dunstable School he qualified in medicine in 1939 from University College Hospital, subsequently serving as Captain in the RAMC from 1941 to 1945 and seeing action in North Africa. After the war he was orthopaedic registrar at St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey, for four years and obtained the FRCS in 1951. He became consultant orthopaedic surgeon at St Giles's Hospital, London, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children and thus found himself in the unusual position of being a consultant and a senior registrar at the same time. Finally he became consultant at St Bartholomew's Hospital, Rochester, and at the Gravesend and North Kent Hospital, and later at the Medway Hospital when the St Bartholomew's orthopaedic unit moved there. He was a senior fellow of the BOA and a member of the Orthopaedic Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. In the early days of the NHS when attendance went up 400% Bob was regarded by his colleagues as a tower of strength. He impressed everyone with his quiet technical competence and his genial unflappability. He always tried to comfort and reassure his patients whatever their state. He died suddenly on 28 December 1982 and was survived by his wife Marion, daughter Caroline and son Julian who became Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Flinders Medical Centre, Australia. After early hospital appointments he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and saw action in North Africa. At the end of the war he was appointed orthopaedic registrar at St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey, and after a short period as consultant orthopaedic surgeon at St Giles' Hospital, London, and Queen Elizabeth's Hospital, Rochester, the Gravesend and North Kent Hospital and the Medway Hospital. To all these posts he brought a reputation for unflappability and evenness of temper under the most trying circumstances. Despite heavy professional commitments he was a regular attender at meetings of the Orthopaedic Section of the Royal Society of Medicine and was a senior Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association. He retired in 1980 and died on 28 December 1982, aged 67. He is survived by his wife Marion, daughter Caroline, and son Julian who is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide.
