Leon Henry was born in Wallasey, Liverpool, on 30 October 1911. He was educated at the Liverpool Institute, where he was a distinguished classical scholar and athlete. He won an exhibition to Cambridge, but for family reasons he went to Liverpool, where he won several medals and prizes and graduated MB, ChB with honours in 1936. He was house physician to Professor (later Lord) Cohen who wrote of him that "he was one of the best house physicians I have had". He became Thelwell Thomas Fellow in surgery in 1938, obtained MD for a thesis on the hypothalamic control of blood pressure and in 1941 passed the FRCS. In 1950 he obtained the MCh Orth. After working in Salisbury and Swindon he was appointed consultant in Cheltenham. He is remembered as a fine surgeon, devoted to his work, with immense kindness, wit and good humour. He was President of the Gloucestershire branch of the BMA. He married Patricia Bennett-Jones, a doctor, in 1941, who died in 1964. Parkinson's disease necessitated retirement at 63. He was survived by two sons, three granddaughters and his brother when he died on 21 June 1984.
