Details
Clifford David Phillips Jones studied medicine at University College Hospital and during his student days played rugby for the Welsh International team as well as for his hospital. After qualifying in 1931 he was initially appointed house surgeon at University College Hospital and later at the Royal Hospital, Wolverhampton, under Professor Milnes Walker. He passed the FRCS in 1938 and shortly before the outbreak of war was appointed out-patients surgeon at St Paul's Hospital, Covent Garden, and clinical assistant at Queen Mary's Hospital, Stratford. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in the early years of the war as surgical specialist and was eventually Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the surgical division of a hospital in Italy. His war-time services were recognised by the award of the MBE in 1945. After demobilisation he went to Sheffield where he was first assistant on the professorial surgical unit working under Sir Ernest Finch until he was appointed surgeon to the Sheffield Royal Infirmary and Hospital and surgeon to Wharncliffe Hospital in 1947. He was an able clinician and a speedy operator with a special interest in thyroid surgery and vascular surgery. He served on the Court of Examiners from 1956 to 1962 and deputised on many subsequent occasions. After retiring from hospital work he went to live at Salcombe in Devon. He died on 3 September 1985, survived by his wife Ivy and children, Chris and Moray.
