Details
Arthur Belson King was born in Norwich on 15 July 1909, the son of Arthur Edward King, a retail chemist, and Adelaide, née Walker. He attended Bracondale School, Norwich, and Bishops Stortford College. From here he went to University College, London, and completed his clinical work at University College Hospital. Following house appointments at London and Norwich he obtained the FRCS in 1939 which allowed him to join the RAMC as a surgical specialist with the rank of Major. He served in West Africa and France from 1940 to 1944. On demobilisation he returned to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital where he worked as senior registrar to Harry Britain before being appointed orthopaedic consultant to the Kings Lynn and Wisbech Hospital in 1951. He was also appointed to the Victoria Hospital, Keighley. He was not interested in committee work and took little part in administration. Arthur King married Ellana Hopkins in 1938 just before he joined the RAMC. Unfortunately she developed a carcinoma of the breast at a very early age, from which she died. He did not marry again until 1968 when he married Johanna Clarson. There were no children by either marriage. Always a very keen gardener, he held numerous bridge parties at his house more especially after he had retired in 1974. Arthur had a fine collection of stamps and was very fond of music. Shortly after retirement he developed Parkinsonism which severely restricted his activities. He developed pneumonia and died on New Year's Eve 1986, survived by his wife.
