Details
Harold Burton Lee was born in London on 9 December 1909, the son of William Edward Lee FRCS (see *Lives of the Fellows*, 1952-1964, p.237) and Ada, née Burton. He was educated at Highgate School and St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, qualifying in 1933. During his early years he was a marathon and long distance runner and before the war he played an active role in the Territorial Army. After graduation he became interested in a career in orthopaedics, having been orthopaedic house surgeon at his teaching hospital. He passed the FRCS three years after qualification and was then appointed chief assistant in the orthopaedic department of St Bartholomew's Hospital in the years immediately before the war. In 1939 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving throughout the entire war and reaching the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. This interest persisted after the war when he returned to the Territorial Army. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration in 1946 and eventually became Honorary Colonel of his Territorial Unit. He served as consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Nelson Hospital, Wimbledon, from 1937 to 1969 and at Alexandra Hospital, Luton, from 1946 to 1958 and throughout his professional life played an active part in the orthopaedic section of the Royal Society of Medicine and the British Orthopaedic Association. He was unmarried and retired from practice at the age of 60. He died on 14 April 1985, aged 75.
