Details
Alban Lewys-Lloyd was born at Towyn, Wales on 3 October 1902 the son of Evan Lewys-Lloyd, the County Medical Officer of Health of Merionethshire, and his wife Margaret, née Vaughan. He was educated at Towyn School before entering St Bartholomew's Medical College, qualifying in 1926. He initially intended to work in public health and passed the DPH in 1930. Later on he became interested in surgery and pursued a career in the pre-war municipal hospitals working at Hackney and later on at St Olave's Bermondsey, where he eventually became surgeon superintendent. He passed the FRCS in 1939 and during the bombing of London undertook the surgical care of large numbers of injured patients brought to the hospital. His administrative ability ensured that damage to the hospital was speedily repaired and that the work of the hospital was able to continue throughout. After the war St Olave's Hospital became integrated with Guy's and his enthusiasm for teaching ensured the successful outcome of this project. His ward rounds were popular with students and the large number of patients available for teaching contributed to the success of his fellowship classes. His main interest was surgery of the upper gastrointestinal tract. In addition to his professional and administrative work he played an active part in the BMA serving as Chairman of the Bermondsey and Southwark Branch and being elected a Fellow in 1966. His main recreation was golf at which his handicap was in single figures. In 1951 he married Anne Muir, a general practitioner. After retiring from Guy's and St Olave's he lived at Bromley until his death on 14 April 1989. He is survived by his wife and step children.
