Details
Labeeb Isaac McGuire was a general surgeon in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He was born in Bishmizzine, Lebanon on 15 June 1924, the son of Khalil and Katrine (née Jeba). His father, whose original surname was Muffarrij, had emigrated to Australia in 1891 and, after acquiring the wool broking firm McGuire Brothers in Goulburn, New South Wales changed the family name to McGuire. Khalil returned to Lebanon in 1923 to marry and Labeeb was born the following year. When Labeeb was six months old, the family sailed to Australia. They stayed with family in Sydney for a period and then moved on to Mount Morgan, Queensland, where Khalil had bought a drapery business. In 1936, the McGuires relocated to Rockhampton, where they established another business. Labeeb was an excellent student, became *dux* of his senior year and, in 1941, at the age of 16, started studying medicine at the University of Sydney. He qualified in 1946. He returned to Queensland, to the Royal Brisbane Hospital, an institution he served for almost 40 years. He was a surgical registrar and then, from 1957 to 1984, a visiting surgeon. He gained his FRCS in 1956 and his FRACS in 1973. He taught at the University of Queensland and, from 1957 to 1968, was director of the postgraduate medical education committee. He also lectured at the Australian College of Nursing. Before he retired from the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 1984 he published a history of surgery at the hospital. He continued in private practice until 1997. He was interested in Australian history and also researched the history of his ancestors, the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. He was a devout Christian and a member of the congregation of St Andrew's Uniting Church, Brisbane. In 1960, he married Ruth Rennie. They had three sons, John, Paul and Mark, and ten grandchildren. Labeeb Isaac McGuire died on 6 June 2015. He was 90.
