Beric Stutter was born in North London. After graduating in 1938 at the Middlesex Hospital he held various resident posts with the intention of making a career in surgery. War intervened, he joined the Royal Navy and took part in the evacuation of Dunkirk. He served in Arctic convoys, the Mediterranean and the Far East and on being released from the Navy, he continued his surgical training and became FRCS in 1949. He was senior surgical registrar at Chase Farm Hospital and Barnet General Hospital and he was later appointed consultant surgeon at Barnet General Hospital, with sessions at Potters Bar and Cell Barnes Hospital. He was a capable and conscientious surgeon, particularly good at emergency surgery during which his quiet competence was most reassuring. He retired in 1977 and moved with his sister to Worthing. He was an accomplished pianist and violinist and he had a talent for oil painting and cooking. He bore his final illness with characteristic stoicism and modesty. He was unmarried and was survived by his sister Beryl and brother Malcolm when he died on 5 March 1984 aged 67 years.
