Stephen Creighton Suggit was born in Slingsby, Yorkshire, on 11 September 1909, the son of Dr Bertram Suggit MB, ChB Leeds, DPH, senior resident medical officer to the Public Dispensary, Leeds, and his wife Agnes Isabella, née Baker. His early education was at Bedford School, after which he entered University College, London, for his pre-clinical studies. He passed the second MB in April 1929, the primary FRCS in June 1929 and gained the Goldsmith Exhibition in anatomy and physiology in July 1929. His clinical studies were at University College Hospital and he qualified in 1932. His early appointments were as house surgeon to the ear, nose and throat department, house physician and as assistant radium registrar at University College Hospital and after passing the FRCS in 1934 was resident surgical officer at the Royal Masonic Hospital during 1935. He then became the resident surgical officer at the Central London Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital until he was appointed honorary assistant surgeon to the ear, nose and throat department of University College Hospital in 1937, becoming full surgeon in 1944. Shortly before he qualified he was commissioned as Surgeon Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and after qualifying he was promoted to Surgeon Lieutenant. In 1938 he became Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander and having been mobilised in August 1939 served in the Royal Navy as ear, nose and throat specialist until he was demobilised in December 1945. He then became civilian consultant to the Admiralty. After demobilisation he returned to University College Hospital, but resigned in 1948 to migrate to Australia where he became assistant ear, nose and throat surgeon to the Brisbane General and the Mater Hospitals. He was a foundation member of the Oto-rhinolaryngological Society of Australia in 1951, and, apart from a period of nine months as consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon in Salisbury, Wiltshire, remained in Australia for the rest of his life. He wrote extensively in professional journals, initially on deafness caused by gunfire but latterly on a wide range of topics. He married Dr Winifred Powys Thomas MB, BS, on 16 January 1936 and they had two daughters (the eldest trained as a nurse) and a son, Dr Richard Ifan Suggit MB BS FRCPA director of pathology at Gosford District Hospital, Australia. On 26 August 1975 he married Sandria Biggs, by whom he had one daughter. From a small child he was devoted to making and running 00 gauge model trains and spent many evenings with his layout or at railway club meetings. He died on 11 May 1989 aged 79.
