Born in Edinburgh on 16 December 1946, Beynon studied medicine at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and St Thomas's Hospital. He was a surgical registrar in Wolverhampton and at St Thomas's Hospital, a senior registrar in urology in Edinburgh and consultant urologist at New Cross Hospital. With his energy, enthusiasm and sense of humour he was an ideal colleague, always supportive and keen to offer advice. His patients appreciated his relaxed manner. He developed research interests in stone disease and prostatic carcinoma and was elected chairman of the prostate group of the Medical Research Council. Outside work he was an enthusiastic golfer and walker but derived most pleasure from sailing off the west coast of Scotland. He died on 3 September 1992, survived by his wife, Gill, son Andrew and daughter Lucy.
