Details
Arthur Pinkerton Crawford, the son of Andrew Pinkerton Crawford, a doctor, and his wife Lilian Mary, née Donnelly, was born on 22 September 1923 at Caboolture, Queensland, Australia. At the age of ten he spent a year confined to bed as a result of polio and was educated at the Church of England Grammar School, Brisbane, graduating in 1946 from the University of Queensland. He was to devote the greater part of his life to public service, in the widest sense, in his home State. After graduation he took over his father's suburban general practice for eight years, and in 1960 he spent two years as surgical registrar at the Hammersmith Hospital, London, obtaining the Fellowship diplomas of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. On returning to Australia he obtained a consultant appointment at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and became senior surgical specialist at 1 Military Hospital, later playing a leading role in establishing a surgical service with the 8th Field Ambulance in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. There followed remarkable involvement with many organisations to do not only with the welfare of the profession and the disabled, but allied business interests, including being a foundation fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. His name is perpetuated in the Arthur Crawford Foundation, set up to assist physically handicapped children needing education and rehabilitation. Hoping to improve standards in hospitals he entered the Queensland Parliament in 1969, but resigned in 1977, having been frustrated in his objectives. A tall, energetic and gregarious man and an outstanding member of the Queensland medical community, he died suddenly whilst playing golf on 17 June 1995. He was survived by his second wife Louise, his adult children Anne (Lockrey), Elizabeth (White), Alexander, and eleven grandchildren.
