Details
Born in 1930, Dulal Ghosh was raised by a widowed mother in humble circumstances and won a scholarship to the Calcutta Medical College, qualifying MB BS in 1954 and gaining the Calcutta MS in 1961. He came to Britain in 1966 and passed the Fellowship in 1969, gaining the Edinburgh Fellowship in 1968. In Calcutta he had originally trained to be a thoracic surgeon, but gave this up after coming to Britain because of ill health, and went into general practice at Oldbury. Being deeply concerned by the plight of the underprivileged in India, he left the bulk of his estate to welfare institutions there, as well as to medical research in Britain. He died on 16 April 1995.
