Hennessy had both medical and dental qualifications and practised in both fields. As well as his private practice in Melbourne he was honorary consultant surgeon in the Nose and Throat Department at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, and honorary consultant surgeon to the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. He retired from practice before 1980 and died on 28 July 1993.
