From New Quay Council School he went to the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and then to Durham University Medical School where he won the Ranken Lyle prize and achieved second class honours in the final MB BS. He was house surgeon and house physician at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, from 1938 to 1939, subsequently becoming surgical registrar from 1939 to 1944, where he acknowledged the influence of Professors Pybus, Barclay and Gilmour. He joined the RAMC in July 1944 and served in Normandy, Belgium, India and South East Asia, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1947 he returned to become consultant surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. An all-round general surgeon, his special interest was in portal hypertension. He was a Member of the Court of Examiners from 1960 to 1966 and Chairman in 1966. He married Lorna Kirkup in 1944 and they had two daughters and two sons, one of each becoming a doctor. He died on 25 July 1994.
