Andrew Killey Monro was the son of James Donald Monro MD, of London, and Beatrice, née Killey. His grandfather was also a medical doctor. He was born on 27 August 1907 in London and was educated at Highgate Junior School, Epsom College and Pembroke College, Cambridge. He trained at the London Hospital where he became senior resident. He came under the influence of Mr Rodney Maingot at Southend-on-Sea where he was the senior resident and the only resident surgeon in the Southend Emergency Medical Service during the second world war. After serving as a squadron leader surgical specialist in the RAF from 1945 to 1947 he was appointed a consultant surgeon to Southend General Hospital and later to St John's Hospital, London. In 1964 he became senior lecturer in surgery to the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith, where he played an active part in training candidates for the FRCS. He was a member of the Court of Examiners from 1949 to 1953 and Hunterian Professor in 1944. In 1960 he became the 35th elected member of the James VI Society and in 1966 was Visiting Professor to the Canadian Prairie Provinces and British Columbia. At Cambridge he had rowed in the trial boat in 1926, later becoming a member of the Leander Club. He played in the first XV at the London Hospital, later developing keen interests in sailing and golf - he loved the Rye Golf Club. As skipper of his boat his sailing, often with a junior crew, has been described as 'inspirational - but they all kept their life jackets on!' In 1942 he married Diana Louise Rhys, the daughter of Owen L Rhys, MD FFR, radiologist to the Cardiff Royal Infirmary. He had first met Diana at the age of four and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1992. Their twin daughters, Sally and Jane, were born in 1943 and their son, Andrew Hugh, born in 1950, became headmaster of Clifton College, Bristol. The family lived 'over the shop' in Harley Street and his children remember daily meals when they were instructed to introduce a topic or to speak only in French! When asked about his vocation, Monro was heard to say 'the greatest vocations in my life have been to heal, to teach, and gently to preach Christianity'. His brother, John Kirkpatrick Monro FRCS (qv) died on 21 April 1993. James Lawrence Monro, his nephew, is also a Fellow of the College. Andrew Monro died on 25 June 1993.
