Details
Man Mohan Nath was born on 25 August 1911 at Fazilkah, Punjab - now part of Pakistan. His father, Kanwal Nain, was a magistrate and his mother was Bishan Dei, a housewife. He was part of the Leiah family, who were well known in the Punjab and who all moved to Delhi after the partition of India. Two of his cousins qualified MRCP. He was educated at the King Edward Medical College Lahore, whence he graduated MB BS Punjab in 1935. Specialising in oto-rhino-laryngology he obtained the Punjab DLO. During the second world war he joined the Indian army medical service with the rank of major (1943-46). Coming to England, he obtained his Fellowship and the English DLO in 1948. Returning to India he joined the Rajasthan Medical Service in 1950 and became the ear nose and throat specialist at the Medical Colleges of Bikaner and Jaipur until 1952. He then became ENT specialist and head of department at the Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur. He married Dr Snehlata Nath (FFARCS 1949) in 1941 and they had a son Sherdil who was born in 1943 and a daughter Shabnum Gokhale who was born in 1945. Sherdil became FFARCS in 1972 and is a specialist in the treatment of pain in Umea, Sweden. Shabrum qualified MB, BS in 1969 and took up private practice. Man Mohan was very active in the Rotary Club. He was in charge of the family planning centre and an active member of the Delhi Traffic Group. Deeply committed to social work, he gave most of his working hours to free dispensaries for the poor. He also founded a medical college in Jamshedpu, Bihar. He died on 5 February 1992 and his wife, Snehlata, died in October the same year.
